Workshop in Granadero Baigorria

Culturally Aware in ELT lessons by Prof. Silvia A. Schnitzler

On Sat. July 12 th from 10:00 to 13:00
We enjoyed this demonstration in which we learned how to tackle the integration of the cultural component in ELT lessons from two angles:
Ø Project Work: PROYECT your WORK to your Community
Ø Music and Songs: Breaking Barriers: Singing beyond Borders
P W: She demonstrated the steps that have been accomplished so far in the programme she has been developing with her students in the area of Hotel Management. The cultural component is very strong as the educational intention is to ‘use’ the foreign language within as well as beyond the frontiers of our country. Values, such as respect and tolerance, are enhanced. This project aimed at fostering students’ growth not only from a practical point of view- progress in their knowledge of the English language- but from an experiential standpoint- development as a committed citizen of Argentina and of the World.

M & S: Following the format of the workshop Silvia has been delivering during the past years entitled “More than just singing”, she focused on the songs which carry a strong cross-cultural component. The participants were asked to put themselves into their students’ shoes. By doing the activities first, we were able to anticipate problem areas and find a way out prior to the implementation of the activities in the classroom.

Speaker’s Biodata:
Teacher of English (I.E.S. “Olga Cossettini”, Rosario); post-graduate degree (U.N.R.). Lecturer in Phonology I (I.E.S.). Teacher of E.S.P. and business courses. Marketing assistant graduate (Instituto de Ciencias Comerciales). E.L.T consultant, workshops and events coordinator at SBS Librería Internacional. Presenter of New Techs in language teaching.

It was a fantastic meeting in which all the participants learned a lot and shared our experiences. THANK you all for attending this wonderful workshop.

In this holidays I went to Cordoba with my parents and my sister. Well, Cordoba is fantastic, because the landscape is beatiful but it is boring, because there are some mountains.

In Cordoba walked every day and I went to the shopping center with my mother and my sister. Also, we went to the swimming pool because the weather was ok!

This summer, I also went to the club and met my friends, too. In my free time, I listened to music and watched tv. Also, I got up very late.

My last holidays
During my last holidays, I met my friends and we went to the club every day from three o´clock to half past eight. In the evening we played volleyball in the beach or football with the boys. When the weather wasn´t good, my friends and I met in the shopping centre or we went to the cinema to see a film. In February I went to Mar del Plata with my parents for ten days. I stayed in a big hotel with a lot of rooms and there was a big playroom. There, I met new friends from different cities. The weather was fantastic! It was very hot and there weren´t any cloudy or rainy days. We went to the beach very early in the morning and we were there all day. At night, we ate a lot of different dishes. Then, we visited interesting places. My holidays were fantastic! I miss them a lot.

British New Year

New Year Traditions
In Britain the custom of first footing is practiced. The first male visitor to the house after midnight is usually supposed to bring good luck. Usually they bring a gift like money, bread, or coal, which is done to ensure the family, will have plenty of these things all the year to come. The first person must not be blond, red-haired or women as these people are supposedly bad luck.

The Druids gave a gift of twigs from the mistletoe, as this was a plant that was sacred to them as a magic source of fertility. It would bestow on the recipient a fruitful year in the number of children, as well as the amount of cattle and the amount of crop.

OCTOBER Halloween Month

Halloween Origin
How did it start?

It all began in what is now France and the British Isles. It was started by the Celtic people long ago....
The Celtic people feared the night of October 31. It was the night of their festival of Samhain, Lord of the Dead. The Celtics feared Samhain and in order to please him, the Druids (Celtic priests) held cruel fire rites in his honor. They made huge bonfires every year at this time. The bonfires were usually made of oak and considered sacred.
At this festival, the Druids made sacrifices to the gods. They burned criminals, prisoners, and animals alive. By observing the victims die, the Druids saw omens of the future, both good and bad. The powers to make predictions of the future were thought to be strongest on this night. Why? It was because the Druids believed that the spirits were allowed to roam free on this night of the year. The Druids believed the spirits were powerful and wild on this night, and if they were treated right, they would help with predictions of the future. However, if the spirits were ignored, they would punish the Celtic community.
The Druids believed that, above powerful and wild, some spirits were evil. This is why the Celtic people wore costumes during the Samhain festival. The purpose of the costumes was to frighten the spirits. Plus, this way, the spirits wouldn't be able to recognize them.(This is the origin of costumes.)
To please the spirits, the Celtic people left food outside their houses on Halloween. If any hungry spirits came by, they could take the food and leave the Celtics in peace.(This is the origin of 'trick or treat'ing.)
